An Oarsome Endeavor: Field-based energy availability assessments in 46 elite rowers to inform health and performance

Abstract:
This presentation will highlight findings from one of the largest field-based studies examining energy availability (EA) in Tier 4–5 (elite and world-class) Olympic rowers during an 18-day altitude training camp. Using best-practice measurements of energy intake, exercise energy expenditure, and physiological outcomes, alongside hormone assessment via saliva, urine, and venous blood sampling, the study provides a comprehensive evaluation of athlete adaptation. Despite high training loads and day-to-day fluctuations in EA, athletes maintained optimal average EA and demonstrated favorable hematological, hormonal, and performance adaptations, offering practical insights into nutritional monitoring and athlete support during intensified training.

About the Seminar Series
The seminar series features speakers from across the institutions that make up the Alliance, covering topics related to our mission of uncovering the principles of performance and translating them to improved performance and care of athletes and all people.

The goal of the seminar series is to foster scientific exchange and the formation of new research collaborations through a set of research talks that are clear and compelling to researchers from a broad range of fields.
